Abstract

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to analyze the disaster awareness of nursing students, to build a disaster education program based on their awareness, and to provide basic information on how to provide effective education to enhance coping skills in disaster and crisis situations.

Methods : This is a descriptive research study to figure out and make a content analysis of the experiences of 250 selected nursing students from four different colleges that were respectively located in Seoul, Gyeonggi Province, Gangwon Province and Jeolla Province, after interviewing them.

Results : As for the definition of disaster, three categories and 18 statements were selected. Four categories and 10 statements were selected as to the cause of disaster, and four categories and 19 statements were selected concerning the importance of disaster. Seven categories and 21 statements were selected regarding the way of disaster prevention, and Ten categories and 26 statements were selected as to what they wanted to learn to ensure safety in disaster and crisis situations.

Conclusion : The findings of the study suggest that in order to offer sustained education associated with disaster management for nursing students, educational institutions need to conduct education on disaster nursing and disaster preparation. In addition, it seems advisable to run a disaster-related curriculum to raise disaster awareness, to make better on-site preparations and to enhance coping skills.
